DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next chapter meeting Thursday\, December 8th at 7:00pm. Members are encouraged to bring native plants as door prizes\, and we will continue our tradition of bringing cookies to celebrate the holidays!\n\n\nOur Tucson Chapter meeting is coming up on Thursday\, December 8th. The talk will be hybrid\, with the ability to join us on Zoom or in person. The Zoom link will go out the day before the talk\, and we will open up Zoom at 6:30 pm with the talk beginning at 7:00 pm. For those of you joining us in person\, we are meeting in the ENR 2 building on the University of Arizona campus in room S215 on the second floor. This building is located at 1064 E Lowell St\, Tucson\, AZ 85719\, Google Map of ENR2 Building. The best way to enter is via the Lowell St. entrance on the north side of the building. The closest parking is the 6th street garage located on the north side of 6th street\, directly adjacent to the ENR2 building\, the cost is $2/hour and you MUST have a credit or debit card as the garage DOES NOT accept cash. There may be limited free parking nearby but there is no guarantee\, members who live on the west side are also encouraged to take the FREE street car to the UofA campus.\n\nThe distribution and drivers of subtropical plant species in the U.S. sky island region\, presented by Jim Verrier.\nThe large number of subtropical plants reaching their northern range in the U.S. sky islands contribute to the unique botanical flavor of this biodiverse region. This talk will explore the extent of subtropical plant distribution in the Arizona-New Mexico sky islands\, drivers of subtropical plant occurrence\, regional patterns of subtropical species turnover\, and sky island subtropical hotspots.

DESCRIPTION:The Arizona Native Plant Society and United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management cordially invite you to join us on Saturday\, October 22\, 8:30 a.m. at the Waterman Restoration Site\, located on the Ironwood Forest National Monument\, as we recognize 12 successful years of important restoration work and celebrate National Public Lands Day. \nThe celebration will include a short ceremony unveiling a new interpretive display showcasing the restoration work and its benefits to the Sonoran-Desert ecosystem. Following the ceremony\, attendees will tour the new interpretive display and demonstration garden. Lite refreshments will be available. \nGuest speakers will include Doug Ripley\, President of the Arizona Native Plant Society (AZNPS)\, AZNPS State Conservation Chairman John Scheuring and BLM Arizona State Director Raymond Suazo. Sandy Bahr\, Director of Sierra Club Arizona will serve as the keynote speaker. \nThis site is now a restored upland Saguaro-Palo Verde landscape with over 110 native plant species and fewer than 150 buffelgrass plants still emerging per year. \n  \nDirections to the site: Drive exactly 19 miles west of I-10 on Avra Valley Road. SUMMARY:Native Seed Collection Workshop and Tour of Seed Lab
DESCRIPTION:Join Borderlands Restoration Network on Saturday\, October 15 for a tour of the BRN Seed Lab to learn about their seed lab operations and programs\, then head out to the beautiful San Rafael Valley to learn about native grasses and their ethical seed collection protocols. \nParticipants will then help collect seeds that will be used in a local ecological restoration project to mitigate erosion and revegetate the landscape to support habitat in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains on public and private lands. \nParticipants should bring water and snacks\, wear sun-protective gear\, long pants\, and sturdy shoes for walking across uneven terrain and be comfortable hiking short distances. \nSeed collection equipment as well as snake gaiters and blaze orange safety vests will be provided. DESCRIPTION:The Waterman Restoration Story\n\nPresented by John Scheuring\, AZNPS Conservation Committee\n \nThe Waterman Restoration site is on BLM land on the northern bajada of the Waterman Mountains on Ironwood Forest National Monument. An AZNPS-led restoration effort started in 2010. This site is now a recovering upland Saguaro-Palo Verde landscape with over 110 native plant species and fewer than 150 buffelgrass  plants still emerging per year. This talk will highlight the often overlooked “hero” native plant species that are opening the way to a stable native Saguaro-Palo Verde Upland landscape.
