DESCRIPTION:Our Summer meeting will focus on how the desert springs back to life when the rains come! \nWe’ll begin with Chapter announcements and business. Next\, we’ll have a guided discussion on a book chosen by members to read (see below). Also\, our Vice-President will give a short presentation on the plants she has seen greening up and flowering after the recent monsoon rains. \nThe selected book is When the Rains Come: A Naturalist’s Year in the Sonoran Desert by John Alcock. If you would like to discuss the book\, it is available at some local library districts\, though you may need to request a hold. It is also available through online retailers and possibly at local bookstores. \nAll are encouraged to attend whether or not you have read the book. \nThis virtual Phoenix Chapter meeting will take place via Zoom.  To attend\, you must register at this link to join us in our virtual meeting room. Please note: This meeting will not be recorded. \nThis event is open to Arizona Native Plant Society members as well as the general public. There’s no way to know if it will\, but we can all see some wildflowers at this presentation! Take a walk through the winter/spring annual plants with Sue. See some all-time favorites and some more unusual species. Be prepared to share your favorite spots to see wildflower displays or unusual plants. \nBiographical information:  Sue has been learning about plants of the Sonoran Desert since she moved to southern Arizona in 1983. Sue worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, Endangered Species Office\, in Arizona for 8 years and then was the botanist at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument for 19 years. After retiring in 2013\, she co-authored the Flora of Southwestern Arizona with Richard Felger. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Fred Heath\, “Bodacious Butterflies” \nDescription:  Anyone present in SE Arizona in the second half of 2021 couldn’t help but notice the unprecedented abundance of butterflies. Fred will present a brief primer on butterfly biology: life cycle\, host vs. nectar plants\, predators and avoidance including mimicry which will help explain this phenomenal flight.
