DESCRIPTION:Lane Butler. Assessment and Status of Rumex orthoneurus\, a Rare and Vulnerable Forest Service Conservation Agreement Species on the Tonto National Forest \nThis talk will tell the story of Rumex orthoneurus on the Tonto National Forest from the late seventies to the present. How have populations changed? How has management changed? What actions have been taken to conserve the species under Conservation Agreements? What is the species status today and what does its future look like? Lane will address these questions and more. \nLane Butler is currently working on several rare and endangered plant conservation grants at the Desert Botanical Garden. She enjoys hunting for (and finding!) rare plants\, especially flowering Arizona hedgehog cacti on the Tonto National Forest. In 2015\, she earned her Master of Science at ASU in Plant Conservation Biology in the riparian plant community ecology lab. Her project emphasized the relationships of plant and butterfly abundance and diversity to stream-flow permanence along Sonoran Desert streams. \nRegular evening programs are presented on the third Tuesday of the month\, March through October\, at 7:00 PM via Zoom. SUMMARY:Tucson November Chapter Meeting - The Natural History of Pollination in the Desert Southwest (and Beyond)\, presented by Dr. Judie Bronstein
DESCRIPTION:All organisms reproduce – and among organisms\, plants reproduce in the most diverse ways..  Most plants require pollen to be moved between flowers\, a feat accomplished by wind\, water\, and animals ranging from insects to fish to birds and mammals. Studies of pollination are revealing how interactions among species weave ecosystems together.  In this talk\, I’ll introduce the weird and wonderful world of pollination by highlighting the natural history of some of our iconic native plants\, from the Sonoran Desert to the top of Mount Lemmon. I’ll also discuss actions we can take to help secure the future of pollination. \nA halictine bee gathers pollen from anthers of a small Gilia flower.

DESCRIPTION:Gardening with native plants is a win-win endeavor.  There are hundreds of attractive native species from which to choose.  They are beautiful\, drought-tolerant\, and provide habitat for native insects and other organisms.  Jared and Katy will facilitate a discussion about a different sort of horticulture–one that doesn’t center the plants and how they look but rather views plants as part of a larger ecology.
