At 3:30 Lyn Loveless and John Schering will lead a plant ramble. At 5:00 we will break for a picnic. The board will provide the sandwiches; attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Due to summer rains in the region\, we are looking forward to many amazing finds. Shannon Lencioni\, Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife: Status Report on Two Rare Cacti on the Navajo Nation \nShannon will provide a report on two tiny\, rare cacti that grow on the Navajo\nNation: Brady’s Pincushion Cactus (Pediocactus bradyi) and Fickeisen Plains Cactus\n(Pediocactus peeblesianus var. fickeiseniae)\, a northern Arizona endemic. This\npresentation will provide an update of the four monitoring sites\, including\nsurvivorship\, mortality\, recruitment\, and reproductive output.\nShannon is the botanist for the Navajo Natural Heritage Program. She has worked\nwithin the Colorado Plateau since 2018\, and has spent several seasons working on\nvegetation crews in eastern Nevada and the Wyoming rangeland. SUMMARY:Introduction to Grasses at University of Arizona Herbarium
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Offering – Introduction to the Grasses \nThe “Grass Class” is a two-day workshop jointly sponsored by the Arizona Native Plant Society and the University of Arizona Herbarium. This year’s workshop will take place on October 9 and October 16\, 2026\, from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM at the Herbarium on the U of A Campus. Enrollment is limited to 20 people\, and the charge is $40.00. This class is intended for botanists and natural resources practitioners who have a need to identify grasses in their work\, and for serious amateurs who want to extend their botanical skills. You will learn the basic biology and morphology of grasses and will put that knowledge to work identifying living specimens of some representative local grasses. You will practice using a dichotomous key for grass ID\, and will be introduced to resources to help you expand your knowledge of these essential plants. Registration is first-come\, first-served.
