SUMMARY:Tucson Monsoon Mixer and Native Plant Swap!
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to inform you that after a two-year hiatus\, the Executive Committee of the Tucson Chapter has decided to bring back the Monsoon Mixer Event. The Monsoon Mixer will take place on Friday\, August 12th\, at 6:30 pm at the Mercado Annex\, located at 267 South Avenida del Convento. We have rented the outdoor event space at the Mercado Annex\, so there will be plenty of room to mingle or socially distance as you see fit. There are three restaurants and a very well-supplied bar\, all outdoors\, and all located around this complex\, so there will be ample choices for food and libations. \nMost importantly\, this event is about coming together and forging relationships with your fellow native plant enthusiasts! This event is open to all\, so please invite friends\, family\, and anyone you think may be interested in what your local chapter of the AZNPS has to offer. We are pleased to be facilitating this event and offering more opportunities to come together in person around our shared love of Arizona’s fascinating flora. \nLooking forward to seeing you all in person\, and swapping stories about the last two years of gardening\, botanizing\, habitat restoration\, and so on! \nAs the title noted\, instead of our typical silent auction from prior years\, we will be holding a plant swap featuring plants\, plant books\, and botanical art.  To this end\, if you have items that you would like to bring to exchange with fellow plant lovers then please do. We want to make sure that all items relate to our mission of educating people about the native flora of Arizona so a few guidelines are offered below. \n-For plants\, we ask that people only bring species that occur in the Southwestern US and Northern Mexico and preference is for plants native to Arizona. So on that note please DO NOT BRING NON-NATIVE SPECIES (i.e. Aloe\, Echevaria\, African Euphorbia species). If you are not sure if your plant is native feel free to email and check with us. \n-In terms of books\, we want literature focused on Arizona\, the Sonoran Desert\, and the Sky Islands. Books related to gardening or botany in the wider Borderlands region are acceptable but an Arizona focus is preferred. \n-For botanical art\, again\, our focus is on the flora and landscapes of Arizona so please stay within this theme. \nDon’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Dash\nPresident of the Tucson Chapter of the AZNPS\nnativeplantstucson@gmail.com

SUMMARY:A Morning Stroll in a Happily Recovering Desert
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Waterman Restoration Site \nDirections: 19 Miles east of I-10 on Avra Valley Road\, turn left at the Pioneer sign\, drive one mile ahead and bear left all the way.  \nPlease wear sturdy shoes and bring a camelback or fanny pack for water. We will be walking slowly but over uneven and sometimes rocky terrain.  \n8:00 AM- 10AM  \nLimit: 12 participants \nRSVP to nativeplantstucson@gmail.com \nThe Waterman Restoration site on Ironwood Forest National monument is now in full desert recovery with over 110 native plant species and a gradually increasing number of insects\, birds\, small mammals\, reptiles and even visits of desert sheep. In the mid-2000s this same site was known as the “Mother of all Buffelgrass Patches”.\nAfter generous recent rains\, the desert is now coming alive. Perennial plants are leafing out and new plants are emerging underfoot. We will stroll through a desert in various stages of restoration\, walking among mid-size and newly emerging desert trees\, ocotillos\, and bushes; learning how to identify them in different phases. We will learn about many overlooked plants that are powerful restoration agents and soil builders. We will see plant succession in action among trees and shrubs. We will also see how simple water harvesting techniques have brought life-giving moisture to the landscape and healed areas that had been bare and apparently “sterile”. Best of all we will discover new things from participants who happen to see something unexpected or who have knowledge or observations to share with the group.\nThis will be an opportunity to enjoy the desert together and learn from one another!

SUMMARY:Cienega Creek Nature and Botany Walk with Pinau Merlin and Lyn Loveless
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 31 \n 7:00 to around 10:30 or 11am (depending on how hot it gets) \nLimited to 10 participants \nMeet at the 3 bridges parking lot (east\, just 0.3 miles past the Gabe Zimmerman parking lot.  Detailed directions sent to participants after sign up).  Carpooling would be helpful. \nRSVP to: nativeplantstucson@gmail.com \n\nEnjoy a delightful morning exploring several different habitats including desert grassland with a wonderful diversity of plants and flowers plus butterflies\, lizards\, birds and other creatures. Then we drop into the one of the last remaining desert riparian ecosystems with perennial stream flow (with 3 species of native fish\, plus frogs and toads\, mud turtles\, snakes) in Southern Arizona. Here the shady\, lush riparian forest hosts an abundance of wildlife (including coatis) and vegetation. Our pace is relaxed as we stop to observe all the wonders\, including tracks\, a bat roost\, many birds (Gray Hawks nest here) and other wildlife.  We will especially keep our eyes open for Lilaeopsis schaffneriana ssp recurva\, a federally listed riparian plant species.  But with the rains we’ve had\, we are likely to see lots of good plant species\, in full bloom. \nThere is no designated trail in Cienega Creek and we’ll be crossing the creek several times and walking on rough\, uneven ground with tree roots\, rocks\, etc. Participants should be able to walk for 3 miles with some uphill at the end. \nBring binoculars\, hats. water\, snacks\, walking stick\, sturdy close-toed shoes that can get wet. (sandals not recommended because of rough ground\, ants\, spines etc.)
