Fremont Cottonwood
Populus fremontii
« Back to citizen participation project
The dominant riparian tree along the streams and rivers of the Arizona deserts, Fremont Cottonwood tends to be replaced by Narrowleaf Cottonwood at higher elevations and by Arizona Sycamore in the rocky canyons of the middle elevations. This very large tree often forms pure stands and a closed leafy canopy 10-20 meters above ground. Some of the most well-developed stands of Fremont Cottonwood are found along the Verde River in the Verde Valley and along the lower San Pedro River.
