Velvet Ash

Fraxinus velutina

« Back to citizen participation project

The fruits of the Velvet ash are called samaras. It is a one-winged seed basically. Leaves are compound. See the leaf photo below which shows only six leaves (with two more leaves just emerging). What appears to be one whole leaf is actually a leaflet. In the lower left is one whole leaf composed of five leaflets — one terminal leaflet and four more leaflets in two pairs. Velvet Ash leaves typically have 3-5 leaflets with one or two pairs plus the terminal leaflet.
