Description | This species is a tropical cousin to the temperate cardinal flower (L. cardinalis). Sierra Madre lobelia occurs in the U.S. only in the Pajarito mountains of southern Arizona. This plant best lends itself to warm, relatively frost free gardens in places the southern parts of the state, or greenhouse cultivation in cooler climates. The true joy of this plant is the abundant orange/yellow tubular flowers which appear in the spring and can continue into the fall. This species is an excellent hummingbird attractor, and spreads rhizomatously to form patches. Plant in a well watered bed in a courtyard or against a wall with some protection from late day sun. |
